Heartworm in cats, kittens, dogs and puppies

How are heartworm caught?

These worms live in the heart and arteries of infected animals. As they develop, they release microscopic larvae into the animal's bloodstream. These are then 'swallowed' by mosquitoes as they feed on the infected animal. When the mosquitoes then feed on another animal (which can be man), they pass the infection on in their saliva.
