Heartworm in cats, kittens, dogs and puppies

Health risks posed by heartworm

Man is not an ideal host for this parasite, so the risk of developing serious illness as a result of exposure to this parasite is low.

However, if a dog or cat suffers a heartworm infection in the heart or lungs, surgical treatment or drug therapy may be required to remove them, if the animal is to be saved. Either carry a large element of risk, and a high failure rate.
